NATIONAL VOLUNTEER WEEK

National Volunteer Week 1st ---7th June saw members and volunteers clearing undergrowth, in the churchyard and ivy from the churchyard wall, together with small trees which had taken root (No more elder flower to add to the wine) . Donations and a start up grant enabled us to purchase the tools required.

CHURCHYARD

We are pleased to say work has began on the churchyard after an Ecological survey by Gwent Wildlife Trust. Recommendations were made on the management of the site to encourage wildlife, Voles, Green Woodpeckers and slow worms being some of the species found, together with plants and insects.
Following their recommendations contractors employed to cut back the very dense undergrowth could only be used when bird nesting had finished.
Some scrub had to be left to encourage small nesting birds and hedgehogs.
Japanese knotweed presents a problem which will require constant spraying to eradicate.
Nevertheless a start has been made on the South end of the graveyard which has now been cleared allowing relatives to visit their loved ones graves.

WEBSITE

A lady in America saw our church web site while surfing the net and has made enquires about relations buried in Ebenezer.

HISTORICAL

We received a visit from a descendent of the Rev Ebenezer Jones 1795-1829 she was thrilled to find the church still worshipping and made a donation to the churchyard fund.
We sent some information on to her about her ancestor (Edmond Jones prophesized the minister following him would be called Ebenezer hence the name of the church)
She thanked us for the information and sent an article she had on the chapel in welsh published early in this century. We were fortunate to have the assistance of Pat Powell who had it translated, giving us another insight into the start of Ebenezer Church.
